The Wedding: Photos

Diana Mertz Brickell and Paul Sek-Bin Hsieh married at noon on May 9th, 1999 in La Jolla, California. Here are photos from the rehearsal and wedding.

The rehearsal was on Saturday morning. Our attendants, Cliff, Alexa, and Zachary, were there, as well as both sets of parents. We had a blast trying to figure out what we were supposed to do. These rehearsal pictures are some of my favorites, given the odd juxtaposition of the wedding poses and the casual clothes.

Papa and I practice our walk down the aisle. This picture is almost identical to the picture from the real ceremony.

We look ready to say "I do" here. Again, this picture is almost identical to the picture from the real ceremony.

We've done it! In the real wedding, we'll be having the toast next, given by the best man, Cliff.

At the rehearsal dinner, Paul's mother gave me this lovely string of pearls. They were just perfect with my dress. Here, Paul is putting the pearls on me, with Paul's parents looking on in the background.

Getting Ready

On the day of the wedding, I woke up early to have my hair done, then we drove to the La Jolla Women's Center around 10:30 am. Paul and I were just in casual clothing; we changed into our formal wear on location. It only took me about 3 minutes to put on my dress. From what I heard, the morning suit proved a bit more troublesome for Paul.

Here my mother is putting on the the pearls that Paul's mother, Emmy, gave me at the rehearsal dinner.

The wedding dress was actually my mother's, which we had altered to fit me. I couldn't have been more pleased with the dress; it was perfect.

Here is my mother (with my grandmother) at her wedding in the very same dress. The only substantial alteration that I made was to shorten the sleeves, for otherwise they would have been too tight. (I also didn't wear a veil.)

Here I am, putting on my pearl earrings. I like this picture because it shows all of the intricate loops that my hair was put into earlier that morning.

The morning suit was fairly elaborate and confusing. Good thing that Paul had his brother Tim and his best man Cliff to help him out.

The Ceremony

The ceremony was a very short affair; I think that it lasted only 5 minutes. Paul and I wrote the text of the ceremony, and John did an excellent job of delivering it from memory.

Papa walks me down the aisle. I was so nervous that I could barely manage to look up!

We're about to say "I do" here.

Here is a shot of the ceremony, taken from behind (and a bit above). It shows just how small the wedding was!

The Pictures

After the ceremony, Cliff gave an excellent toast. Then hors d'oeuvre were served while pictures were taken. These are some of my favorites.

Paul and I right after the ceremony. We were both so giddy; we could hardly believe that we had been married!

Paul and I again.

Paul and I yet again.

This is our whole wedding, all 23 people who attended.
